An outgrowth of the Vega, the Lockheed Orion was a low-wing monoplane made primarily of stressed-plywood construction. Utilizing the low-wing to house its retractable landing gear, the Orion boasted a grad coefficient 25% lower than that of the Vega. Its top speed of 225 mph made it one of the fastest production planes in 1931.
Eventually, the Orion was built with the new "de-icer boots" to prevent ice formation on the wing's leading edge. It was the ill-fated Orion Explorer, with a combination of unrelated Lockheed parts, that crahsed on take-off in Alaska killing the famous Wiley Post and Will Rogers.
