Japan is an island country located in the Pacific Ocean just east of North and South Korea, Russia and south of Taiwan. Japan's name means 'sun origin' and is most often referred to as the 'Land of the Rising Sun'. Most do not realize that Japan is not one contiguous land mass, but is a collection of more than six thousand islands the biggest being Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku. Known for its lush forests, soaring mountains, iconic temples and temperate climates, Japan and its world cuisine offer the traveler a chance to experience life in a different way.
