Always a enthusiast, Jim Carter worked his way up from a 15-year old engine cleaner at Sutton Oak MPD in Lancashire to firing and driving a wide variety of locomotives from Patricroft Depot. From his earliest days on the railway Carter carried a camera and the results of his fine camera work give a very special coverage of the days of steam - from the footplate.
